Chapter 10

“Tess, Tilly,” Hap greeted when Tilly and I walked in from the street. “What a nice surprise. It’s been a while.”

“It has been a while,” I agreed as Tilly trotted over to get the dog cookie Hap always had behind the counter for her. “Now that I’m pregnant and not working or volunteering at the shelter, I’m not in town nearly as often as I used to be. I’ve missed everyone.”

“And everyone has missed you.” Hap offered me a hard candy, which I took. “I imagine you and Tony must be quite occupied preparing for the upcoming festivities.”

“We are,” I said as I unwrapped the candy and popped it in my mouth. “Tim and Tom will arrive in town tomorrow. From what I understand, the plan is to film a short segment at the antique shop in Kalispell on Sunday and then tackle the Montrose Estate on Monday. They plan to move onto the theater on Tuesday.”

“I thought they were going to do the theater first.”

“They were, but they decided to switch things up when they found out about the recent murder. I haven’t spoken to the men personally, but according to Tony, I think the segments they film at the antique shop and the Montrose Estate will be greatly abbreviated from what they first planned.” I tossed my candy wrapper in the trash. “I guess that makes sense since there will be a lot more interest in the theater, so allocating most of the time there seems to be the logical choice.”

“And the Stonewall Estate?”

“They plan to film there on Saturday night. Since it’s an after-dark thing, I assume they’ll take a day to set things up. I’m not sure how the men will divide their time once they’ve filmed the short segments, but it does seem like they’ve bitten off a lot.”

Hap chuckled. “Seems they aren’t the only ones to have bitten off a lot.”

Hap had a point. Tony and I would be exhausted before the Halloween Festival was over.

“Tony’s trying to handle things without anyone’s help, but it is a lot,” I admitted. “He’s at the town offices trying to get mistakes on the permits for the craft fair and kiddie carnival straightened out. Once he’s done there, he plans to meet me here to pick up the hardware for the kiddie carnival booths, which he plans to erect a week from today.”

“Hattie and I were talking about it, and we both feel that you and Tony deserve to have help with all of this. I suggested we talk to Tony about asking folks to help, but Hattie wanted to put out some feelers to confirm that we could round up the help we needed before making any promises to Tony. We chatted this morning, and things are looking good in terms of finding willing volunteers, so she planned to call Tony later today. Since the two of you are in town now, I’ll see if she can get away from the bakeshop so we can chat in person.
